Declaring that these predominantly Meitei outlawed organisations were continuing to indulge in anti-national activities, Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee said 'government has decided to extend the ban on these organisations for further two years'.

The decision to ban these organisations was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee presided by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The meeting was also attended by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh and Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, Mukherjee said that the outlawed organisations whose ban has been extended include Revolutionary People's Front of Manipur, United National Liberation Front, PREPAK, Kangli Yawoi Kanna Lup and Kuki Liberation Front.

He also announced that the government has decided to raise 25 new battalions of India Reserve Police, which would be deployed in Naxalite affected states, Jammu and Kashmir and in the Northeast.
