Oz Indian-restaurant bombing part of 'curry war'?

July 19, 2010 12:25 IST

A suspected "curry war" among two Sydney-based Indian restaurants is heating up, with two food vans being firebombed early on Monday morning.

The vans, belonging to 'Maya Da Dhaba' on Cleveland Street, were set on fire along with the food contents stored in the rear of both vehicles.

Surry Hills Police said that they believe the vans were deliberately set alight, and they are now investigating whether attack was an act of retaliation, following the firebombing of the Copper Tiffin restaurant on July 5.

The Copper Tiffin and the Maya Da Dhaba restaurants are side by side, and local residents claim that there is a lot of competition between the two outlets.

Police said that they were aware of reports there was possibly a "curry war" among several Indian restaurants in the area.

"We are looking at links between the two incidents," The Daily Telegraph quoted a police spokesman, as saying.
