CBI arrests Assam minister on bribery charges

The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Assam Education minister Ripun Borah,  while he was trying to offer a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to an officer investigating Daniel Toppo murder case.The arrest took placeat a guest house on Mathura Road in Delhi on Tuesday.

The CBI official, who is probing murder of student leader Daniel Toppo, filed a complaint last evening that the Minister allegedly offered him a bribe of Rs 10 lakh to hush up the case. Toppo was the district president of the All Assam Tea Tribe Students Union and had contested the 1996 assembly elections against Borah.

Immediately after Borah's arrest, his associate Mukul Pathak, who was travelling from Delhi to Guwahati, was taken into custody at the Delhi airport itself.

The CBI registered a case under section 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
