The Assam Public Works, a voluntary organisation engaged in a crusade against the demand for sovereignty by the banned United Liberation Front of Asom, has announced that they would launch a fresh mass awareness campaign throughout the state to mobilise people's opinion against the outlawed outfit.
"The ULFA has crossed all limits by killing innocent civilians in the state. It is time the people stand up together and voice their rejection of the group and its demand for a sovereign state," APW secretary Abhijit Sharma said.
The APW is organising street-corner meetings and plays to generate public awareness against the violence perpetrated by the banned ULFA as part of its campaign.
Sharma said the 'frustrated' ULFA leaders had lost their link to the masses of the state and had become mere instruments in the hands of the Inter Services Intelligence of Pakistan.
"The ULFA leaders are scared of facing the people or understanding ground realities. There is no doubt that the outfit has come under the heavy influence of the Pakistani ISI. They are holed up in Bangladesh, and cannot come out to face the real ground situation," Sharma said echoing what Indian government has been maintaining.
The APW, last year carried out an opinion poll among people of Lower Assam district over the issue of 'ULFA's demand for restoration of sovereignty in Assam.'
The results of the opinion polls that was released in January this year showed that over 90 per cent people polled simply rejected the outfit's demand for a sovereign state.
The ULFA had reacted by terming the opinion poll and its outcome part of design of the 'Indian Colonial Rulers' to mislead people and a desperate bid to negate the 'massive support base' enjoyed by the outfit among the people.
The ULFA later termed APW secretary Abhijit Sharma an agent of Research & Analysis Wing and a policeman in the guise of NGO worker.
The ULFA further accused him of being hand in glove with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in triggering explosions to kill religious minorities in the state to create communal hatred.
