Noted Right to Information activist and secretary general of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, Akhil Gogoi was seriously injured when he was allegedly assaulted by a group of  Youth Congress members at Chamota in flood-affected Nalbari district of Assam on Friday.

The KMSS leader, who also spearheads the movement against mega dam in Assam, was on way to call on some flood-hit people in the area when goons coming on motorcycles pounced upon his hired vehicle and beaten him up black and blue.

He had received serious injuries in the waist and head before he was rescued by local villagers from the clutches of goons. He was rushed to Nalbari Civil Hospital by the people.

A few journalists travelling with Akhil too were manhandled by the goons and some video camera belonging to journalists were broken. Akhil later speaking to media from his hospital bed alleged that the attack on him was carried out by about 15 Youth Congress members.

Though police is trying to shift him to Guwahati Medical College Hospital where he has been referred to by doctors in Nalbari Hospital, Gogoi insisted to stay put in Nalbari till the police arrests the culprits behind the attack on him.
