After imposing ban on calling bandh in the state by various organisations with immediate effect, Assam government has imposed ban on holding all kinds of procession, rallies etc in the State for one month in view of the sensitive situation prevailing in the state in the wake of communal violence in Bodoland Territorial Autonomous District Council and adjoining areas.
The state government in an appeal made through the media called upon all the organisations in the state to observe restraint and refrain from organizing any rally or procession in the state as such action may lead to disruption of law and order situation in the state under the prevailing circumstances when the government is doing everything possible to bring back normalcy in violence-affected areas through various confidence building measures.
The government's order came in the wake of rising voices of protests against it failure to detect and deport illegal migrants from Bangladesh from the state.
Spontaneous public rallies were brought out during the last few days in various parts of eastern Assam and north Assam demanding immediate action from the government to solve the problem illegal migration from Bangladesh given that the migrants are posing threat to the indigenous population of the State thereby creating social tension in the State.
Meanwhile, All Assam Students' Union, the spearhead in the continuing tirade against the alleged infiltration across the border from Bangladesh, has condemned the state government's decision to ban organising protest rallies and stated that its agitation against illegal migrants would continue notwithstanding the ban imposed by the government on holding protest rallies.
Earlier, the government imposed ban on calling bandh in the wake of occurrence of violence during bandh called by Bajrang Dal and All Assam Minority Students Union () on August 27 and August 28 last.
