Assam: 16-yr-old shot 9 times in front of her parents

August 27, 2014 12:37 IST

A 16-year-old girl was dragged out of her house, assaulted and shot at point blank range at least nine times in the presence of her parents by the National Democratic Front of Bodoland ultras in Assam’s Chirang district. The militants suspected the teen of being a police informer.

The killing took place on August 21. The body was lying in a field near her house in the Dwimugri village on the Indo-Bhutan border as her parents were afraid to retrieve it, according to media reports.

The girl was killed as revenge of an incident earlier in the day where five NDFB-S terrorists were killed allegedly after the girl tipped off policemen about their whereabouts.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced payment of Rs 20 lakh as ex-gratia to the next kin of the girl and institution of bravery award in her name. Her name has also been recommended for the National Bravery Award.

"Our government will perpetuate the hallowed memory of the little brave girl who defied the dictates of the killers. Her valour and sacrifice will continue to inspire and motivate the young generation for years to come," an official release quoted Gogoi as saying.
