The first Everest conqueror from Arunachal Pradesh Tapi Mra and his wife were assaulted and injured by miscreants, who also looted them, near the state police headquarters, police said on Friday.

The Mra couple were waylaid by a gang of six motor-cycle borne miscreants late last night on NH52A, about 5 km from the city centre when they were on their way to Itanagar from Hollongi by car. The miscreants snatched away Tapi's mobile handset, purse containing Rs 15,000 and his ATM card and forcibly took couple to a nearby ATM booth to draw more money.

Mra was injured badly in his forehead by the miscreants, the police said.

When Mra ran towards the police headquarters for help as soon as he alighted from the car near the ATM, the miscreants fled from the spot in his car with his wife inside it. His wife was later rescued form Chimpu area, 2 km away, where the miscreants had abandoned the car, the police said.

A case has been registered and manhunt is on to nab the miscreants, the police added. The 25 year-old youth had conquered the world's highest peak in 2009 and had donated his entire expedition gear to the state museum last week to motivate youngsters to take up adventure sports.
