Are VIP inmates in Tihar linked to call girls?

June 27, 2011 23:05 IST

After the busting a call girl racket in high security Tihar jail in Delhi, a high-level probe that is being led by a director inspector general ranking official, is investigating whether any of the VIP inmates who are currently lodged have any links with the call girls.

Neeraj Kumar, director general of Tihar, was still shell shocked and refused to discuss anything with rediff.com when we eventually were able to reach him on Monday.

Assistant Jail Superintendent R Maurya was caught red-handed during a raid soliciting call girls at his official residence within the jail premises. His family was away in Bihar at the time of the incident, which took place few weeks ago.

When contacted, Tihar jail spokesperson Sunil Kumar Gupta had toldĀ rediff.com, "An assistant superintendent and a constable have been suspended after they were caught with two call girls in the jail complex's living quarters."

"This was his (Maurya's) first ever posting as an IPS officer. Twenty eight year old Maurya had used the services of constable Raj Kumar for escorting the two prostitutes to his residence," Sunil Gupta told rediff.com.

Maurya faces dismissal from service along with the constable Raj Kumar. He is likely to be chargesheeted shortly.

"So far investigations have not established anything about the links of VIP inmates lodged in jail for corruption. They know fully well that link of this nature would be prejudicial to their cases," Sunil Gupta said.

"Reaching a positive or a negative conclusion would be too premature at the moment," he felt. Senior jail officials with proven integrity are assisting in the investigations.

Surprisingly though, despite suspending the two officials, the investigating team has refrained from arresting them till now.
