Anna's hometown erupts following his detention

August 16, 2011 09:15 IST

Anna Hazare's detention in New Delhi has evoked sharp reaction in the social activist's hometown Ralegan Siddhi in Maharshtra's Ahmednagar district.

Hundreds of villagers took to the streets along with their cattle to protest the Delhi Police's action. They were later detained by the local police.

"We want to peacefully court arrest along with our cattle to protest against an Emergency-like situation in Delhi," village sarpanch Jaysingh Mapari told rediff.com.

Mapari said they had no plans to block the Pune-Ahmednagar highway, which is barely 8 km from Anna's hometown.

He also said that the local villagers plan to sit on an indefinite fast if the Delhi Police do not release Hazare soon.
