The Andaman and Nicobar islands have been put on alert against fresh inundations between January 10 and 12.

An increase in the mean sea level in the wake of the tsunami, coupled with an impending danger of higher surges on the new moon night make fresh inundations a possibility.

Meteorological predictions suggest that the sea could rise by 0.3 metres.

Command Met office Officer-in-charge Commander Salil Mehta on Saturday said the sea surge would be on the higher side between 2000 IST and 2200 IST on January 11 and between 2100 IST and 2300 IST the following day.

"We have informed the administration and all measures to quell the fear of inundation are being taken," he said.

But the administration is not pressing the panic button yet.
