The Norwegian cruise liner Blue Lady will finally be broken at Alang ship-breaking yard after the Supreme Court Technical Committee gave its consent to Gujarat Maritime Board to grant beaching permission to the ship, officials said on Tuesday night.
The Supreme Court committee has given a go-ahead to GMB on condition that the 210-odd metric tonnes of disposable hazardous wastes generated while breaking the ship will be disposed of in a safe manner, the officials said.
GMB will be granting official permission on Wednesday for beaching the Blue Lady, they added.
The cruise liner owned by Haryana Ship Demolition Pvt Ltd is currently anchored in Pipavav port a few nautical miles from Alang.
A five-member team from Gujarat Pollution Control Board, lead by chairman Sanjay Tyagi, Atul Sharma from GMB, Dr Naidu from GPCB, Dr B Singh from Mecon (a consulting firm) and Dr Dave from the National Institute of Occupational Health had carried out an assesment of the hazardous wastes on Blue Lady at Pipavav from July 8 to 11 and had submitted a report to the Supreme Court technical committee.
The GPCB team visited New Delhi on July 29 and appraised the committee about the findings of the inspections conducted onboard the ship.
