Tension prevailed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai on Wednesday afternoon as an Air India flight from Jeddah carrying more than 286 persons was about to make an emergency landing.
The airport authorities rushed fire tenders, ambulances with doctors near the runway to meet any emergency following the landing of the flight.
One of the runways was completely cleared for an emergency landing of the Air India aircraft. It was the timely information by the AI pilot to Air Traffic Control of Mumbai about a hydraulic system failure which enabled the airport officials to announce the emergency.
An Air India spokesperson claimed that none of the passengers were injured as the flight made a normal landing. The spokesperson claimed that it was not an 'emergency landing'.
"It was not an emergency but a precautionary landing, it arose after it was suspected that there was a hydraulic snag. The passengers have safely got off the plane and it is parked at the bay where the engineers are looking at it." said the spokesperson.
However, an airport official confirmed that a 'full emergency' was declared for flight AI 930 that carried 260 passengers and 26 crew members.
The official added that the flight whose expected time of arrival was at 1.35 pm, landed at 1.48pm.
