Reacting sharply to his appointment as a member of the Gujarat state Wakf Board by Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Ahmed Patil said that he would not be able to take up the post.

Patel said that he was not consulted before the appointment. "I will not be in a position to take up the responsibility and I have informed Modi about the same," he said.

Modi on Sunday had co-opted Patel to the BJP-led board as a representative of the member of the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. Patel is Congress President Sonia Gandhi's political advisor.

According to sources, the board is constituted in a manner to include one Muslim MP and MLA and Patel is the lone Muslim MP from the state.
