After verdict, Dr Binayak Sen's wife fears for his life

December 24, 2010 15:01 IST

"Absolutely shocking!"

This is how Ileena Sen, wife of Dr Binayak Sen, reacted to the judgment pronounced against her husband by a Chhattisgarh court on Friday.

A Raipur additional district and sessions court held Dr Sen, Naxal ideologue Narayan Sanyal and Kolkata businessman Piyush Guha guilty of treason, waging war against the nation and helping Naxals in Chhattisgarh, under the dreaded Chhatisgarh Special Public Security Act 2005 and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act 1967.

Soon after the additional district and sessions court of BP Verma pronounced the verdict, Dr Sen was whisked away from the court by the Raipur police, Ileena told rediff.com. She feared for Dr Sen's life. "I only hope they (the Chhattisgarh police) don't murder him now," she said.

"My lawyers and me believe that the judgment was pronounced without taking into account the evidence before the court. All the evidence produced by the prosecution against my husband does not stand legal scrutiny," she added.

Ileena is now waiting for a copy of the judgment before deciding the next course of action. "Once we go through the judgment we are going to challenge the verdict in a higher court," she said.
