Parliament on Friday paid tributes to former prime minister Chandra Shekhar. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day as a mark of respect to the late leader and six other members who passed away recently.

Both the Houses observed a two-minute silence in memory of Chandra Shekhar.

Hailing Chandra Shekhar as an illustrious parliamentarian, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said his life was a saga of courage and that with his death an eventful era in political history of the country had come to an end.

"In his demise, the country has lost an eminent parliamentarian, able administrator, a statesman and a dedicated socialist who stood for secularism and a casteless society," he said in the Lok Sabha.

In the Rajya Sabha, Deputy Chairman K Rehman Khan termed Chandra Shekhar an agriculturalist and a socialist by conviction who did remarkable work in primary education and health services.

Chandra Shekhar, 80, died on July 8 in New Delhi after a prolonged illness.
