Civil rights activists on Friday demanded action against some policemen for allegedly torturing 20 members of Christian community for propagating their religion.

The activists claimed that police picked up members of the community on February 25 from Gujar ki Thadi area on a complaint that they were carrying out conversion.

“Policemen at Mansarovar police station tortured 20 people of Christian community who were publicising their faith on February 20. We submitted a memorandum to the Commissioner of Police against the policemen,” Kavita Srivastava, PUCL General Secretary, said in Jaipur.

She alleged that the members were forced by the police to leave the city.

“We demand action against the guilty policemen, change of the entire police staff of the station. If no action is taken, we will demonstrate outside the assembly building to protect the rights of minorities,” she said.

When contacted, SHO of Mansarover Police station Hemant Sharma rejected the allegations and said that no member of the community was tortured.

“There was complaint of conversion against those 20 members so the police brought them to the police station. It was necessary to bring them to the police station because there was resentment in public against them. When it became clear that there was no conversion, they were released,” the SHO said.
