President seeks legal views on future course of action

President K R Narayanan consulted legal luminaries and others today on the future course of action.

The President today summoned Attorney General Ashok Desai and sought his opinion. He also consulted former solicitor general Soli Sorabjee.

As Prime Minister I K Gujral had not recommended dissolution of the Lok Sabha while submitting his resignation, the President plans to explore if any party will be able to form a government. The President may also keep in mind that a majority of MPs are against a mid-term election.

Significantly, Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma called on the President and had a two-hour consultation.

Sangma announced yesterday that he would reconvene the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The speaker adjourned the House sine die on November 24, following pandemonium over the Jain Commission interim report. The speaker was accompanied by Lok Sabha Secretary General S Gopalan.
