Congress calls MPs meet on Jain Commission report

The Congress has made it clear to Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral that swift action needs to be taken against those indicated in the Jain Commission's interim report.

To finalise its strategy in this regard, the Congress has summoned its parliamentary party members on Monday -- two days before the winter session of Parliament begins.

''If the report recommends action against anyone, we expect the government to take action and this has been made known to the prime minister,'' said Pranab Mukherjee.

Mukherjee, who was in the Congress delegation which met Gujral on Thursday night, said they did not demand action against the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. ''How can we ask for action against the DMK as the report is yet to be officially released?''

Some senior leaders, including Mukherjee, Arjun Singh, K Vijaya Bhaskar Reddy and Ahmed Patel, met at the Congress headquarters yesterday to discuss the strategy to be adopted in Parliament.

The scheduled meeting between Congress president Sitaram Kesri and Sonia Gandhi did not take place yesterday and indications are that they may meet tomorrow.

Asked if the Congress is prepared for a snap poll, Mukherjee said political parties should be prepared for any eventuality.

Mukherjee said the Congress would not have made an issue of the Jain Commission report, but for Home Minister Indrajit Gupta's remark -- that the government could not move in the matter as the Commission has not submitted evidence.
