Kupwara is the backward frontier District of Kashmir Valley and is nature lover’s paradise. Kupwara was carved out of Baramulla district in 1979 and has geographical area of 2379 sq km.

To it’s west and north there is LOC which separates it from Muzaffrabad (Pakistan). Administratively Kupwara is divided in three tehsils.

Fifty-seven Kms.from Srinagar, Gulmarg, a meadow of flowers, is a world famous tourist resort situated at an altitude of 2730 meters. Surrounded by dense forests on all sides, Gulmarg is known for natural beauty and is rated as one of the matchless hill resort of the world.

Srinagar district is situated in the centre of Kashmir. The district with a population of around 1.183493 million is spread over an area of 2228 SqKms. The population density in the district Srinagar is the highest in the state. The literacy rate of the district was 33.80% in 1981. The Hazrathalbal Shirne, which is situated on the left bank of the famous Dal Lake in Srinagar is world famous historical site. This unmatched reverence is anchored in the love and respect for the Prophet Mohammad, whose Moi-e-Muqqadas, (the sacred hair) is preserved here. It is one of the oldest and the most spacious of all the mosques in Kashmir, situated in the heart of the city.The foundation of the mosque, an architectural wonder was laid by Sultan Sikander in 1398 A.D. The Shalimar Garden, which is located 15 Kms from the city centre, was built by Emperor Jahangir for his beloved wife, Noorjahan. The gardens with four terraces is 539 by 182 meters and gets water from Harwan through a canal lined with fountains. The fourth terrace was once reserved for royal ladies. The world famous Dal Lake that was described by Sir Walter Lawerence as the "Lake par-excellence" also lies in his district.

Budgam district came into existence in 1979-80, prior to which it was part of Srinagar District. Budgam is formed of three tehsils namely Budgam, Chadoora, Beerwah and comprises 496 villages. The total area is 1371 sq Kms and agriculture is the main occupation. The only civil Airport in the valley is situated in this district that connects the valley to rest of the country. Besides it provides helicopter services to Kargil, Karnah, Gurez.

Carved out of Anantnag district, the Pulwama district came into being in 1979. The total geographical area of the district is 1398 Sq.Kms.of which 1011 Sq.Kms are covered by forests. The district divided into four tehsils, six community development blocks,six notified area committees and 554 vilages. The literacy rate in the district is 22%. . The world famous saffron fields adorn the district and the cherished apple,Ambree,is also grown here.

Situated 55 Kms, south-east of Srinagar, Anantnag is spread over an area of 3934 Sq Kms with a population of 1.170013 million. It is the third most highly populated district of the Valley after Srinagar and Baramulla. About 89 percent of the population lives in the rural areas and is mostly engaged in agriculture, the principal crops being rice and maize. The district is divided into 5 tehsils, 10 community development blocks, 8 towns, 149 panchayats and 645 villages. The most important shrine is of Amarnath cave situated about 48 KMs from Pahalgam which attracts devotees from all over the world. It is located in the upper reaches of the Distt at an altitude of about 13000ft from the sea level. The shrine is believed to be an abode of Lord Shiva.
