Sena ready to support Seshan: Thackeray

The Shiv Sena is all set to support former chief election commissioner T N Seshan as an independent candidate to the Lok Sabha from Maharashtra, provided he fits into the party's ideology.

''Seshan is an outstanding Indian citizen and deserves support from all quarters. Therefore, even if he contests as an independent, the Sena will go all out to support him,'' Sena chief Bal Thackeray said in a Doordarshan interview.

Looking pale and frail after his recent surgery, Thackeray said that internal elections of a political party was not the Election Commission's business.

Reacting to the Commission's ultimatum on the Sena's failure to hold organisational elections, Thackeray said, ''We have already replied to the Commission on the working of our party.''

He said he has always abided by the Constitution and the functioning of his party was as per the Constitution. Therefore, the Commission should not force the issue on them, he said.
