Tribal militants plan major offensive to disrupt pollsTribal guerrillas are procuring arms and ammunition from neighbouring Bangladesh to launch a major offensive during the Tripura assembly and Lok Sabha elections, a senior police official said, quoting intelligence reports. State Director General of Police B P Singh said the militants were collecting sophisticated arms and ammunition from abroad. "I am not in a position to disclose the secret intelligence report about the procurement of arms by the militants," he said. Another report said the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura, which has close links with the National Socialist Council of Nagaland, recently received a huge cache of sophisticated arms and ammunition besides explosives from the Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan operating in Bangladesh. The arms includes 300 AK-47 and AK-56 rifles, huge quantities of grenades, pistols, revolvers and ammunition. On November 26, the report added ISI operatives handed over the arms and ammunition to NLFT leaders at a camp in the Chittagong Hill Tracts in south east Bangladesh. A senior Border Security Force officer said the vigil along the international border with Tripura has been tightened. This was done following reports that the militants may have entered the state after Bangladesh security forces launched a counter-insurgency operation. UNI |
