Lok Sabha may be adjourned sine die tomorrowThe reconvened winter session of the Lok Sabha, commencing tomorrow, is expected to be adjourned sine die following the tabling of the Gujral government's resignation letter and its acceptance by the President. The Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die this morning after the secretary-general of the House laid on the table the prime minister's resignation letter and a letter from the President asking him to continue in office until alternative arrangements were made. The House had commenced its sitting on November 19, but little business could be transacted in view of the Jain Commission imbroglio and the Congress demand for dismissal of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ministers. Apart from an obituary reference to former member Kapil Dev Shastri, the only business before the Lok Sabha when it meets at 11 am tomorrow is the tabling of some parliamentary committee reports. The Lok Sabha was abruptly adjourned sine die on November 24 when Speaker Purno A Sangma found it difficult to maintain order in view of the noisy scenes over the Jain Commission report. After a meeting with leaders of various parties on November 28, Sangma agreed to reconvene the House on December 2, to discuss the no-confidence motion by Congress member Mamata Banerjee. However, the Congress decided later that day to withdraw support to the United Front government, leading to Prime Minister I K Gural resigning the same evening. |
