January 18, 2010 23:56 IST

Two senior police officers and three of their guards were wounded in a powerful improvised explosive device blast in South Kashmir's Tral Town late on Monday evening.

A senior police officer told rediff.com that militants on late Monday evening set off an IED planted under a bridge when a police vehicle was moving on the bridge in Tral Town, 43 km from Srinagar.

"A sub divisional police officer, a station house officer of Tral and three of their guards were wounded in the explosion. The injured have been taken to a hospital," said the officer.

Earlier in the day, militants shot at and wounded a special police officer near Dejidera on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment.
