In an incident that could snowball into a major issue during elections, the editor of a weekly newspaper was shot dead in Valsad district in south Gujarat on Tuesday night.

Ashok Shah was the editor of Dakshin Gujarat Vartman weekly from Valsad. Influential persons are said to be involved in the murder. Initial, but unconfirmed, reports say the murder is the fall-out of a land dispute.

Shah was killed by some unidentified gunmen near Dungri flyover on the outskrits of the city, police said. Shah was killed by masked gunmen when they opened fire from a point black range on him after intercepting his car, police said adding that attackers fired four rounds. He was taken to Kasturba Hospital in Valsad where he was declared dead.
