January 26, 2009

Maharashtra police Inspector Vijay Salaskar too fought the terrorists during the Mumbai operation, but fell to their bullets, after his vehicle was ambushed by fleeing terrorists, along with Kamte.

Karkare's senior in the Maharashtra Police and Additional Commissioner Ashok Kamte too received the Ashok Chakra posthumously for his active role in the anti-terror operation in the Mumbai attacks.

After 10 heavily armed terrorists had launched simultaneous attacks at various places in the western metropolis, Kamte was part of the police team, which rushed to Cama Hospital where the terrorists had moved in.

When the terrorists tried to escape from the spot, Kamte chased them in a police jeep, but was ambushed, resulting in critical injury to him.

He, however, continued the fight and played a key role in injuring one of the terrorists during the firefight.
