'80% Indians in Malaysia are very poor'

January 13, 2009
GIPIO Secretary General R Gunasekharan pointed out the discriminatory policies practiced by the Malaysian government.

"Today, there are 11 PIOs in the opposition and three in the ruling party. This has happened after being sidelined for 51 years. Eighty per cent of Indians there are very poor. Malaysia is the only country in the world that implements policies to benefit only its own race," he said.

"During the Hindraf movement, many demonstrators carried posters of Mahatma Gandhi to protest the government's discriminatory policies. To break up the protests, the police burst tear gas and used batons. Those images were beamed across the world. It had its effect and that's why today we are in the Malaysian Parliament," he added.
