Dr Singh inaugurated the 96th session of Indian Science Congress at the campus of North Eastern Hill University. He will be taking part in a couple of programmes at the country's biggest scientific meet. The New Year Day's blasts in Guwahati (Assam) has led the Meghalaya security apparatus to go on overdrive to ensure that there were no lapses and prime minister's visit goes off peacefully. Surveillance has been stepped up all along the route the PM would take and bomb squads are patrolling the city. The SPG team, which had arrived in Shillong a couple of days back, took over the function site on Friday, a police spokesman said. Quick reaction team comprising home guards have been formed in addition to the security personnel deployed from the Army and Assam Rifles. Over 4000 guests, including scientists and dignitaries, from across the country and abroad are expected to participate in the science congress.
