India cannot afford to lower its guard: PM
August 17, 2009 11:11 IST

The Centre on Monday observed that the gravity of the threat of terrorism was undiminished and that the nation could not afford to lower its guard.

Addressing a conference of chief ministers in New Delhi [Images], Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] said there was credible information that Pakistan-based terrorists will carry out fresh attacks in India.

"Cross-border terrorism remains the most pervasive," the prime minister said, adding, "There is a need for continuous utmost vigilance."

Talking about internal security, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram [Images] said, "We will encourage state governments to talk to Naxals on the condition that they abjure violence and give up their misconceived arms struggle."

More details are awaited.
