Head of govt should be from Lok Sabha: Advani
August 07, 2009 21:31 IST

The issue of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] not being a directly elected member of Parliament came to the fore again today when Leader of theOpposition L K Advani [Images] said that in a democracy the head of government should be from the Lok Sabha.

"In a democracy, if the Prime Minister is from the Lok Sabha, the gravity of the post goes up. Otherwise, it is just like having a Finance Minister from the Rajya Sabha which does not have any power in money matters," Advani said in reply to a question on whether the Prime Minister should be from the Lower House.

Advani had raised the issue of Singh being a Rajya Sabha MP during the election campaign a few months ago as part BJP strategy of targeting Singh as a "weak PM" as he had never faced the electorate.
