Describing Kashmir as the 'core issue', Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that his country would like to resolve the problem bilaterally with India but if need be, it can always go back to the United Nations.

"We are trying to seek a solution bilaterally and nothing could be better if the two governments can resolve it on their own. But if need be, we can always go back to the United Nations," he told Pakistani mediapersons.

But despite repeated questions, Zardari did not make any reference to the United Nations resolutions which call for a plebiscite in the state.

The new democratic government in Pakistan was trying to improve relations with India, he said, adding he has pushed for formation of a parliamentary caucus on Kashmir.

"We have taken into confidence all political forces in Pakistan," he said.

The people of India and Pakistan need to move forward to resolve the problem, said Zardari, who described Kashmir as the core issue.

Replying to another question, he said the "current uprising in Kashmir is indigenous". However, the problem could be resolved through people-to-people dialogue, Zardari added.
