One man sentenced to death and three to life imprisonment in sensational murder of Patna University professor Papiya Ghosh

A Patna fast track court on Friday sentenced one of the five convicted persons to death for the sensational murder of Papiya Ghosh, and her domestic help Malti Devi in December 2006, three were sentenced to life imprisonment and one got a two-year imprisonment.

Additional sessions judge of the fast track court, Om Prakash sentenced Shankar Sah to death. The Court also awarded life imprisonment to Ashish Kumar, Manohar Kumar, Anil Oraon and two year imprisonment to Ramchandra Mahto.

The official sources in court said that the court found the five accused, including lawyer Mahto , guilty of homicide, under Sections 396, 412 and 414 of the Indian Penal Code.

The police had arrested the five accused last year, but two men are still absconding including Sanyog Rai and Mustakim.  The police had framed charges against five accused in the case in March 2007.

Papiya Ghosh,in her early 50s , was teaching history in the Patna university and had authored two books.
