Senior Congress leader and former Kerala [Images] chief minister K Karunakaran has been admitted to the Vellore Medical College Hospital for neuro-cognitive and rehabilitation treatment.

The veteran leader was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit  on the advice of doctors in Thiruvananthapuram who were treating him for about a fortnight after he met with an accident, deputy leader of the Kerala Congress committee Pitambaram Kurup said.

The 90-year-old former chief minister was flown by an air ambulance to the naval helipad at Arkonam near Chennai, from where he was brought to Vellore by road on Monday.

He was accompanied by his daughter Padmaja Venugopal, son in-law Dr Venugopal and Kurup.

A car in which Karunakaran was traveling had met with an accident at Malappuram about a month ago while he was on his way from Kozhikode to Guruvayoor.

Though he did not suffer any external injuries and resumed his journey to the temple town, he felt uneasy a few days later and was hospitalised. Tests revealed that he had suffered internal bleeding due to the accident.
