Trinamool Congress 'rethinks', not to call sudden bandhs
October 21, 2008 22:07 IST
In an image makeover, the Trinamool Congress on Tuesday said it would not call sudden bandhs and blockades in the interest of the people.
"Our party has taken a stand that it will not call bandhs or blockades on any issue suddenly in the interest of the people," Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee said.
"The people are facing economic hardship and bandhs and blockades will only worsen their situation," she said.
The party's district and block units would also not call such bandhs and blockades without permission from the state unit, she said.
Banerjee hoped the state government would not compel the party to resort to such a step.
The party had faced criticism for bringing traffic to a halt on the busy Durgapur Expressway at Singur during the party's dharna in August demanding return of 400 acre to farmers who did want to part with their land for the Tata Motors [Get Quote].
