Maharashtra Navnirman Sena activists went on the rampage burning shops and hurling stones in and around neighbouring Dombivali after their arrested leader Raj Thackeray [Images] was brought to the police station in connection with the case relating to assault on north Indians.

The activists burnt shops around the Dombivali police station and also indulged in stone throwing at vehicles at many locations, police said.

Thackeray was taken to the Dombivali police station after he was granted bail by a magistrate's court in Bandra in connection with incidents of assault on north Indian candidates appearing for railway recruitment exams on October 19.

Earlier in the day, Thackeray had appealed through his lawyers to activists asking them to maintain calm.

MNS activists resorted to heavy stone-pelting in front of the Kalyan court and also set on fire a number of motorcycles in the vicinity.

A hotel was also set on fire in the locality and many houses were targetted and the entire area looked like a battlefield.

The police resorted to cane-charge to control the mob, which returned to the scene repeatedly.

As it was very late on Tuesday, Raj may be produced in the Kalyan court on Wednesday afternoon, an officer said.

Till then, he will be detained at the Manpada police lock-up.
