Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said on Wednesday night the situation was grave in the terror-hit Mumbai and asked the Centre to provide more security forces to deal with the situation.

Deshmukh said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] and Congress president Sonia Gandhi [Images] called him and expressed concern over the attacks.

The chief minister strongly condemned the terror strikes and asked people not to believe in rumours.

Deshmukh assured people that his government would take stringent action against the culprits involved in the attacks.

Police are fighting the terrorists, he said, and asked people to be at home and maintain peace.

Meanwhile, Deshmukh had cut short his Kerala [Images] visit and left for Mumbai.
