Birth of a new nation

November 5, 2008
Somehow we will discover that we are made to live together as brothers. And that it will come in this generation: the day when all men will recognise the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man.
--From Dr Martin Luther King Jr's Birth of a New Nation sermon, April 7, 1957

The US Election: Complete Coverage

Reverend Jesse Jackson, one of America's senior Black leaders, in tears at the election night celebration rally in Grant Park, Chicago, after hearing that Barack Obama would be the next President of the United States of America.

Jackson, who was present that evening in April 1968 when Dr Martin Luther King, Jr was assassinated, was twice a candidate for the American presidency, never making it past the primaries.

Like Jackson, millions of African Americans wept and rejoiced at Obama's triumph, an event that they could never have anticipated would happen in their lifetime.
