Obama's most likely VP candidates

May 14, 2008

Evan Bayh: A name increasingly heard in this discussion is that of Evan Bayh, another moderate Democrat tied to a swing state. He's former governor of Indiana and a current US Senator from there. The other Senator from Indiana, Republican Dick Lugar, has publicly said Bayh has a bright future in national politics, a rare moment of non-partisanship seen in the Senate's highly combative chamber. Though he initially voted in favour of President Bush's resolution for combat in Iraq, he's increasingly become an outspoken critic of the war and the way in which it's been handled.

He comes from a renowned political family (his father also served as US Senator from Indiana), and he's seen as possessing the political experience and guile that Obama sorely lacks. Finally, ultimately most importantly, he's been a fierce opponent of neo-conservatives in general and the Bush administration in particular, which is sure to serve him well come November.
