New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, who was considered a crusader against corruption, has informed his most senior advisers that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, according to a report.

Spitzer, who was huddled with his top aides inside his apartment early Monday  afternoon, had hours earlier abruptly canceled his scheduled public events for the day, the New York Times reported Monday on its website, quoting an administration official.

The Governor was due to make an announcement in this regard, the papers said.

A first-term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform and end the often seamy ways of Albany, Spitzer is married and has three children.

No details were immediately available and it was not clear which prostitution ring he was allegedly involved in.

Just last week, federal prosecutors arrested four people in connection with an expensive prostitution operation.

Administration officials would not say that this was the ring with which the governor had become involved, the paper said.

But it quoted a person with knowledge of the governor's role as saying that he believes the governor is one of the men identified as clients in court papers.
