With illegal immigration from Bangladesh becoming a matter of major concern after the Jaipur blasts last month, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] on Monday said his government was taking measures to check infiltration.

"The Central government is taking steps to stop cross-border infiltration and illegal migration," Dr Singh told leaders from Assam who met him in New Delhi.

In the backdrop of the north eastern state witnessing a spate of ethnic violence, Dr Singh assured the leaders of the Centre's commitment to development and peace in Assam, a press release issued by the Prime Minister's office said.

Dr Singh pointed out to the leaders that Assam had received the 'highest ever' allocation of Central funds in the past four years and it was committed to implement the 1985 Assam Accord signed by the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

While one delegation comprised All Assam Students' Union and Asom Gana Parishad leaders, another was led by former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta.

The prime minister said the Centre was giving special attention to Assam's needs under various programme, including National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme, National Rural Health Mission, National Urban Renewal Mission and Backward Regions Grant Fund.

While assuring his personal commitment to the state's socio-economic development, Dr Singh said Assam had received special support in the sphere of education, infrastructure development and industrial development.

Mahanta apprised him of the prevailing situation in the state.

"We urged the prime minister to take immediate steps to check the deteriorating law and order situation in Assam and demanded Centre's intervention," Mahanta told PTI after the meeting.

He said Dr Singh was also urged to take initiative for starting peace talks with insurgent groups like United Liberation Front of Assam.
