Monsoon 'weak', likely to revive in next 2 days: IMD

June 04, 2008 21:18 IST

The Southwest monsoon, crucial for agriculture across the country, has entered a weak phase and is expected to revive in the next two days.

Monsoon is slightly weak over Kerala and parts of coastal Karnataka due to a cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea, Ajit Tyagi, Director General, India Meteorological Department, told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday.

The weathermen have forecast strong westerly winds over the peninsular region, which is expected to aid the advance of monsoon in the next two days, he said.

Goa has been receiving rains for the past few days but the weather office has not announced the onset of monsoon over the coastal state as it is awaiting the system to get entrenched.

Monsoon is expected to reach Mumbai by June 10, he said.

Asked about the onset of monsoon over Delhi, Tyagi said it was too early to predict the exact date but expected the annual rainfall system to reach the capital by the first week of July.

"The normal onset date for Delhi is June 29 and since we have forecast normal monsoon this year, the capital may receive monsoon rains by June 29 or by the first week of July," he said.
