In a shocking incident, an employee of a prominent newspaper was shot dead in New Delhi on Monday night, allegedly by one of his friends after an argument.

Sher Bahadur Singh, a driver with Statesman newspaper was killed by his friend in the basement of 'The Statesman' building, in Connaught Place at around 10 pm, a senior police official said.

Earlier police had said a senior manager was the victim in the firing.

Singh was reportedly having alcohol with two of his friends in the basement of the building when the incident took place.

One of Singh's friends, whose identity was not immediately known, took out a firearm and allegedly shot at him after an argument.

The friend did not move out of the place after the incident and threatened that he will shoot if someone comes near him.

Police, who immediately rushed to the spot, arrested him.

Singh was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The second friend, who was present at the spot, was not involved in the firing, the official said.

The police could not record the statement of the accused and the witness because they were heavily drunk, they added.

A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
