The Central Bureau of Investigation has denied Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister's  Mayawati's charge that the UPA government has opened some of the cases against her  on behest of former UP chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

"Different innuendos and meanings have been attributed to the filing of this counter-affidavit at this junction. It is clarified that it has been filed in compliance with the specific direction given by the apex court," a CBI spokesperson said.

"The affidavit was filed in the context of the writ petition filed by Mayawati on May 5, 2008 challenging the FIR filed by CBI," he said.

The spokesperson said the agency had "no option but to file the counter-affidavit at this juncture in compliance with the specific directions of the Supreme Court".

The agency also denied reports that it had widely circulated copies of the counter-affidavit.
