External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] who returned in the wee hours from an official visit to Japan [Images].

Mukherjee is understood to have briefed Dr Singh on the developments in the wake of government's decision to go ahead on the Indo-US civil nuclear deal.

The Left parties, who extended crucial outside support to the government, had withdrawn their backing to the ruling alliance on Wednesday after efforts to reconcile differences with the government on the nuclear deal came cropper.

Dr Singh is meeting President Pratibha Patil [Images] later in the evening.

Sources said that the prime minister is expected to convey to the President that his government enjoys majority in Parliament and is ready to take the trust vote.
