Against the backdrop of sustained demands from Sikhs, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] on Friday took up with French President Nicolas Sarkozy the issue of ban on turban in that country.

Singh raised the issue during his talks with Sarkozy, who responded by saying that there is no ban on wearing of turban in France [Images] though use of religious symbols in certain situations was prohibited, sources said.

Sikh groups here have been protesting against the ban and were demanding that the Prime Minister raise the issue with Sarkozy. Leader of the Opposition L K Advani also took up the matter of turban ban with Sarkozy when he called on the French President.
