'We have to keep the American promise alive'

He began by praising American ideals as the ones that allowed him to set such a historic benchmark, but also warned that the 'broken politics' of Washington DC, particularly the last eight years under the George W Bush administration, had put those ideals in jeopardy.
"This moment, this election, is our chance to keep -- in the 21st century -- the American promise alive," he said. "We are here because we love this country too much to let the next four years look just like the last eight."

In recent months, with polls showing Obama squandering a once seemingly insurmountable lead, he has been criticised as being too passive and reticent about Republican attacks on his past and character. Recently released ads from the McCain campaign have called into question Obama's experience, his associations and even the thrust behind his movement.
In answering these points, Obama said that his parents "shared a belief that in America, their son could achieve whatever he put his mind to." He reserved particularly pointed denunciations for an advertisement that depicts him as merely a celebrity, a phenomenon without substance.
