US Under Secretary Burns likely to visit India
August 08, 2008 01:08 IST
Ahead of the meeting of the Nuclear Suppliers Group on the India-United States nuclear agreement, US Under Secretary of State William Burns is expected to undertake a visit here as part of efforts to coordinate strategy with India for the August 21 session.
Burns may undertake a brief visit next week but no dates have been fixed yet, sources said.
During the possible visit, he will hold talks with Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon, mainly discussing the remaining steps in implementation of the Indo-US nuclear deal.
The immediate step is to seek a waiver from the 45-nation NSG for India to allow it to have civil nuclear trade with the international community.
The NSG is meeting on August 21 and 22 in Vienna [Images] to consider the waiver that has to be approved by consensus.
Both India and the US are engaged in a massive effort to garner support in the grouping, particularly focusing on the few countries that have reservations to the move.
Burns is also expected to be in Vienna during the August 21 NSG meeting.
