A Little Dream, larger cause

September 25, 2007

From Dr Kalam’s house, his room, his school and his library, the story progresses to his college and hostel life, and then to MIT in Chennai.

From there, the story traverses his career at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, the Space Launch Vehicle and Agni missile launches, and lastly to Rashtrapati Bhavan. The film has many clippings acquired from the presidential palace -- the most important one being Kalam’s historic address at the European Union's Parliament.

Dhanapal has also depicted Kalam the poet and music lover in his work. The documentary also goes to villages in Thanjavur where the former President’s pet PURA (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) project has been implemented.

Then, Dhanapal cuts back to Sundar. On listening to his grandfather’s words, Sundar gets motivated to do more.

"The film ends melodramatically with the mother bringing the two kids home and all three going to school together," says the documentary maker.

The film also has an exclusive interview with Dr Kalam along with a message to children. Personally, it was a learning experience for Dhanapal too.

"It has been an ideological change for me. I was a follower of Left ideology till I met Dr Kalam. From politics that believes in protests, I now believe in development politics and policies. After meeting such a humble man like Kalam, you will not have something called ego.

"I have also understood, after Mahatma Gandhi, he is the person who communicates perfectly with people, especially children. It is all because of his positive thoughts. I want the children of India to know him more... That is why I offer A Little Dream."
