A Hyderabad court on Wednesday remanded K Venkat, son of outgoing AP Congress Committee president K Keshav Rao, to 14-days' judicial custody in connection with a murder case.

Venkat, who was taken into custody by Jubilee Hills police on Monday night, was formally arrested on Tuesday and produced before a magistrate on Wednesday.

He was sent to Chanchalguda central jail in Hyderabad on remand till September 26.

It may be recalled that the police registered a case of murder against Venkat after the incident in his house in which his friend and realtor B Prashant Reddy died of gunshot wounds on Sunday.

Prashant's father, in his complaint to the police, had alleged that his son was shot dead by Venkat and disputed the version that Prashant had committed suicide using Venkat's revolver.

However, the controversy kicked up by the incident prompted Venkat's father, Keshav Rao, to quit as APCC president to ensure a free and fair investigation into the case relating to Prashant's death.

He informed Congress president Sonia Gandhi [Images] that he wanted to resign since his conscience did not permit him to remain in the post, lest it could result in allegations of influencing the case.

Though the state government transferred the case to the Criminal Investigation Department of the state police, the formalities were yet to be completed and the city police took him to the court for judicial remand orders.
