Sharif's deportation: PML-N seeks SC's intervention

September 10, 2007 13:01 IST

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif-led Pakistan Muslim League-N on Monday sought the Supreme Court's immediate intervention to prevent the deportation of their leader, who arrived in Islamabad after a seven-year exile.

As Sharif's plane landed at the Islamabad airport, senior PML-N leader Kwaja Sharif met Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikar M Chaudhry in his chamber and sought his intervention.

Chaudhry's response was not yet clear even as the PML-N is reportedly gearing up to move the Supreme Court.
The meeting took place as Sharif came out of the plane 90 minutes after it landed and was ushered into the VIP lounge. He was accompanied by Mutafa Khar, former Governor and close aide of former Prime Minister Z.A.Bhhutto, who recently quit Pakistan Peoples Party and joined Sharif's party.

The apex court had, in response to a petition by Sharif, on August 23 ordered that he and his brother Shahbaz Sharif were entitled to return to the country as citizens of Pakistan.
